Maybe you hit the yoga mat every day and you sweat it out.
You can’t wait to get back to the studio for your next class.
Maybe you’ve considered signing up for a yoga teacher training program. But something is still holding you back.
Well, it’s time to put all the excuses aside and face the facts. Take this yoga quiz and see if you are ready for yoga teacher training! After that, we will go over the results.
Now let’s find out!
YOGA QUIZ: ARE YOU READY FOR YOGA TEACHER TRAINING?
1. Do you visit a yoga studio regularly and have a home practice?
- Yes, my yoga schedule takes up a huge part of my day!
- I’ll attend a drop-in class every so often, and practice at home only when I feel called.
- Not at the moment, but I’m keen to do more.
Having a consistent yoga practice is especially important. Being familiar with yoga vs being practically involved with yoga are two separate experiences that leave you with two very different starting points for YTT.
It’s essential to understand the context in which you will be training in and having direct experience in a studio will prepare you for what’s to come in your YTT.
Likewise having a home practice will cement your commitment to furthering your practice in and out of the studio.
2. Are you clear on your intention?
- I have never been more certain of something in my life.
- Sort of know, but I need more information.
- No, I just want to do yoga.
Do you want to become a full-time teacher after your training?
Are you looking to begin a personal transformation?
Or do you want to deepen your yoga practice?
There is no right or wrong reason to do a YTT. But getting clear on why you want to do it is important.
Because clarity will help you:
- Make the right decisions regarding the type of training you join.
- Help you move forward in yoga.
- And most importantly, you will get so much more out of your immersive experience.
Clarity is key!
3. Do you know what style of yoga you like?
- Yes, I do!
- Well, I like all styles of yoga right now.
- I am still feeling my way into all the different styles.
It would be good to know who you are on the mat before entering a YTT.
There are softer, slower styles like yin or restorative yoga, as well as stronger, more dynamic styles like Iyengar, ashtanga and vinyasa.
Know the style that resonates with you. Because when you do, you will know what you want to teach in the future and as a result, you will get the most from your yoga teacher training from day 1.
You will very likely evolve throughout your course, and that’s OK too. What you don’t want is to decide on a style haphazardly, as you may end up stuck with a certification in a style of yoga and a way of teaching that isn’t authentic to you.
You will not enjoy it. In addition, neither will your students.
4. Do you have a teacher already in mind?
- I have done my research, and I know who I vibe with.
- Not exactly, I’m still researching.
- Do I have to choose a teacher?
It’s important to know who will be teaching your course and what their experience of teaching yoga is. Yoga Alliance is an accrediting body that protects and supports the integrity of the teaching of yoga. Aim to follow a teacher who covers the curriculum and minimum standard set by Yoga Alliance.
In addition to a teachers’ qualifications, you’ll want to ensure the mission of the training aligns with your values and reflects how you want to teach in the future.
You want your YTT experience to reflect and enhance who you are, and what you are comfortable with.
Your YTT experience should help you to become the best version of yourself.
5. Are you ready to begin a journey of transformation?
- Oh my god, I have been waiting to dive deep for a long time!
- I guess.
- Am I really going to be opening up to stranger because I thought we were just going to focus on yoga postures.
Yoga is more than perfecting asanas and memorising Sanskrit pose names. A YTT will cause you to open up and reflect on who you are – on and off the mat – especially as you prepare to teach yoga to others. Yoga will ask you to share that vulnerability and be willing to dive deep into your transformation.
6. Are you ready to devote long and intensive hours in the yoga studio?
- Hell yeah! I’m ready to commit.
- How many hours is long, and how intensive is intensive?
- I don’t know if I’m prepared for that.
Most YTT’s especially the ones abroad last for around a month or less, usually in a retreat-style format where you will live, eat, train and sleep in the same place with the same group and teachers.
A YTT in this format requires dedication and the ability to work intensively for a length of time.
Additionally, some yoga studios will spread out the training over months of time. As a result, it takes a lot of time to finish. Whereas many yoga retreat centers offer immersions with a 14-day or 28-day model.
7. Perfecting asanas is equal to, if not more important than your ability to listen to your body.
- False
- True
The best yoga students are the ones who listen to what is happening within, not without during their practice.
Having important to cultivate the ability to listen, learn and adjust according to your body’s needs. Yogic philosophy tells us this is far more than attaining perfect positioning or sequence.
8. Are you willing to dedicate time to studying yogic philosophy, anatomy, and theory?
- Yes, I’m ready! I already have the study modules.
- If I have to, then yes.
- Oh, I wasn’t aware it was part of the training.
Not many people know that a YTT is equal parts practical and theory. You will be required to spend a lot of time studying the yogic philosophy and all the theory and anatomy to support your training.
It is your responsibility to ensure you have the correct base knowledge to impart to your students once you are a teacher.
