Dal Makhani is a staple food originating from the Punjab region of India and is often served during special occasions, such as weddings. This rich vegetarian dish is known for its versatility and works well as a main meal, included in a buffet, or as an accompaniment.
We encourage you to experiment with this recipe that was provided to us by our friends at the Great Ganga Hotel in Rishikesh, India. Dal Makhani is by far one of our favorite items to order on their menu.

Indian Dal Makhani Recipe
From the Kitchen of Great Ganga Hotel
Gluten-Free, Sugar-Free, Dairy-Free
You will need:
– Black gram, red kidney and bengal gram lentils
– 1 bay leaf
– Cardamom
– Cinnamon
– Clove
– Turmeric
– 1 tsp cumin seeds
– 1 chopped onion
– Ginger
– Garlic Paste
– Tomato purée
– Black pepper and salt
Directions:
– Mix all lentils together and allow them to soak for 1-2 hours
– In a pot, add bay leaf, cardamom, cinnamon, clove, turmeric, oil and boil the daal (lentils)
– Add oil, cumin seeds and one chopped onion, stir until brown
– Add ginger and garlic paste, mix until it becomes dark brown
– Add tomato purée and cook for 2 minutes
– Add the boiled lentils and cook for 5 minutes
– Salt and pepper to taste
