Imagine tucking into a breakfast bowl overflowing with juicy, mouth-watering mango, papaya, pineapple and melon. Sipping on coconut water mid-afternoon to quench your thirst after a day in the sun. Adding a generous dollop of avocado guacamole to your lunch plate. Feasting on main courses and desserts all punctuated with a taste of the tropics and washing it down with a cocktail treat with flavours so fresh it’s as though the fruit was just plucked from the tree!
In Costa Rica healthy, healing foods are abundantly available and grown locally (we even grow some in our own organic garden). Here at Blue Osa they are our dietary staples.
In this series of blog posts we’re going to reveal the sensational nutritional qualities of the tropical treats that feature them regularly they form the basis of many of the amazing meals on our weekly menu from the Pura Vida Kitchen.
Mango
Mangoes are one of the tastiest tropical fruits around. There are mango trees everywhere in Costa Rica. Mangoes are beautifully juicy and sweet, soft and fleshy. You can eat them sweet or added to savoury dishes for extra zing and bite.
Why we love mangoes:
- They contain special bio-active elements that dramatically improve digestion and have a cleansing quality.
- They contain a high level of soluble fibre, pectin and Vitamin C that helps to lower cholesterol.
- They are a slight aphrodisiac and contain levels that Vitamin E that regulate sex hormones and boosts sex drive!
- They’re high in iron, helping to combat anaemia.
- They boost concentration as they contain Glutamine Acid which helps keep cells active.
- They are antibacterial and help to keep bugs at bay.
