Pina Colada on a beach with a white tropical flower, coconuts and a pineapple sitting next to it.

Blue Osa’s 5-Ingredient Piña Colada

Do you like Piña Coladas? Just like everyone knows Rupert Holmes’ 1979 hit Escape (The Piña Colada Song), everyone knows what a piña colada is.

When you’re daydreaming of a tropical beach vacation, chances are you see yourself sipping on a Piña Colada while gazing out into the turquoise abyss while time stands still. It’s that classic tiki bar drink that announces you’re ready to be on vacation.

That’s why our 5-ingredient piña colada is a staple here at Blue Osa. It’s light, delicious, refreshing and screams paradise vacation! It’s hard to believe that something so delicious and popular across the entire world, can be so simple to make. And if you’re in the tropics and coconuts are abundant, like here on the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica, it’s hard to resist making piña coladas every day!

History of Piña Coladas

But what’s the story behind this iconic coconut concoction? Well, legend has it that Puerto Rican pirate Robert Cofresí, who was born rich in Puerto Rico but turned into a pirate when the state began failing is said to have served his crew coconut, pineapple and white rum in the early 1800s in order to boost morale.

Now we see why piña coladas have such a tie to paradise . . . pirates!

So if you’re sitting at home wishing you were at a beach destination like Blue Osa, put on some beachy jams, blend up these five ingredients, sip on a delicious piña colada and start planning your trip.
