One of my Top Lifetime Vacations!

March 25th, 2010

Although it’s been over a week since I visited Blue Osa , I can still take my mind back to the serenity and beauty from my experience there. This tropical beachfront resort was the perfect getaway from the winter of 2010!

First impression are everything and upon my arrival, I could Blue Osa was built with a high end design taste and passion while exuding comfort and intimacy that’s important to me.  The staff immediately made me feel like I was an old friend who they were happy to see and please.

There were so many highlights from this trip including daily yoga, delicious food, luxurious spa, lush jungle beach, exciting excursions.

The yoga classes were challenging, educational and fulfilling.  I learned so much more about my practice, poses, daily mediation – all with personal attention and assistance that was purposeful, but not intimidating.

There were 4 daily meals that were prepared in the open-air kitchen by a dedicated and talented staff. We enjoyed a wonderful array of fresh ethnic foods including Mexican, Italian, Indian, and Japanese – all with lots of options for vegetarians or carnavores alike! The cold soups and homemade desserts were so unique and creative; the resort should publish a recipe book!

The jungle surroundings blended perfect with the beachfront surf and was alive with exotic wildlife.

I enjoyed several experiences in the on site spa including acupuncture, the coffee body scrub and deep tissue massage.  All the treatments were blissful and a perfect compliment to the physical elements of my trip.

The optional off site excursions were fun getaways and included the canopy tour (fantastic!), surfing (make sure there are waves!), and waterfall hike (go on your own).

I met some wonderful people from across the globe at Blue Osa and made some terrific friends who will remain “for good.”

As life’s daily stresses return after vacation, my experience here has given me the capability to return to the serenity, peace and mindfulness of Blue Osa.

A Return To Calm and Serenity

March 22nd, 2010

I just returned from a wonderful week at Blue Osa. The Blue Osa owner’s, Aaron and Adam, must be very proud of themselves and what they accomplished down there in Costa Rica.

The beauty of the land that Blue Osa is located on is so very calming and soothing on your eyes. Each day when Aaron had us do our nature walk after morning meditation and breathing exercises, I would discover some new treasure. The flowers, the beach, the architecture of the buildings all added to a visual heaven. While doing yoga to see macaws flying through the air and the waves crashing to the beach only added to its beauty and uniqueness.

From the special moments, yoga in the early morning, horseback riding through the jungle, or zip lining over the trees or helping David spread his late lover’s ashes on the beach all added to my everlasting memories of my week at Blue Osa. I returned to New York a much more calm and serene human being.

I am already looking forward to next year and my return to Blue Osa, to the people there and to keeping in touch with the beautiful people that I met this time.

Sincerely,
Paul M

PS don’t go thinking you will lose a few pounds while there! You will get excellent food made by two wonderful chefs. I miss the meal bell already summoning us to delicious healthy lunches and dinners.

Costa Rica Retreat, March 2010

March 19th, 2010

Today is my first day back to civilization after spending a week at the Blue Osa Retreat center in Puerto Jimenez, Costa Rica. I have been reading through my travel journal and marveling at how profound and wonderful a week I just had. The setting at Blue Osa is absolutely beautiful…right on the beach.

The accommodations were extremely comfortable, and the hospitality was impeccable. All of the staff were incredibly kind, attentive, and helpful, and the food was SPECTACULAR. We had one incredible, delicious, creative meal after the next, and we ate our meals in a gorgeous open-air environment, in full view of the ocean. The men at the treat were all extremely friendly and trusting, and there was such a strong sense that we were all in support of each other’s growth as yogis.

This retreat was particularly meaningful for me because I chose to be here for the one year anniversary of my husband’s death last March. I brought some of his ashes with me and held a short memorial for him on the beach. I was joined by seven other who sat in support of my process and listened to what I had to say. One gentleman brought me a plate with a bunch of bougainvillea flower petals on it, and I ended up sprinkling my husband’s ashes on the flower petals. The men watched me as I let them go on the beach. It was a beautiful moment that I will never forget. Aside from that, the retreat itself was phenomenal.

Aaron’s teachings repeatedly astounded me with his insights and applications of yogic principals. We chanted, we meditated, and we pushed ourselves to our limits and beyond. We also had a considerable amount of time to relax, connect with each other, and take side trips to local areas. It was such a safe environment, and I am so grateful for the space that Aaron has created at Blue Osa.

If you have a chance to go!

A Memorable Experience!

March 16th, 2010

I wanted to share with you the magic of my time here, and i still have a few days left! What you have here is difficult to describe, it is all of the things one wants when traveling and hoping that you’ve made the right choice. The grounds, the hospitality, the rooms, showers, pool, the food (seriously !) the chef (wow) Maria, Stephen, its is all too much, its perfect.

What cant be described needs to be experienced, the Yoga Shala is just absolutely the most amazing space, a room filled with windows and a teak wood ceiling, my first shavasana i couldn’t get over it, beautiful. A room caressed with light and sounds and a view of the ocean that will change your own view forever.

Blue Osa Yoga Sanctuary and Healthy Spa in Costa Rica on the Osa Peninsula

My practice has gone places i didn’t expect, i grew in area’s of my life i didn’t know were there, my own view of what is infinite and possible are forever changed and that was a big gift to me, thank you!

I was at another reputable Yoga Retreat Spa in Costa Rica a couple years back, and it was lovely, nice place, hospitable, clean, the beach was behind the property, you could hear but not see the ocean, the spa treatments were good, the yoga room was a bit of a disappointment, while it was nice in respect to a quiet place to practice, it seemed like an after thought and not a focus, tucked in the back of the spa, a bit small, yet still nice.

If i were to compare, i would say take your life and those you love to Blue Osa and transform through the most amazing Yoga you will ever experience; then get a massage, enjoy the pool, and wine and dinner, there is no comparison.

Shanti.

The Facts About Butter

February 7th, 2010

Pass the butter ~ ~ ~ ~ This is interesting.

For those who know me intimately know my butter habits. (Yes it is a real habbit.) Many people often shake their heads in bewilderment, but in my previous life, I did so much research and reading about butter to know that people were crazy to even consider eating margarine, or even avoid butter altogether with it offered such a nourishing alternative. Many people do not know this, but buric acid (I am sure I spelled that wrong) plays a crucial role in the formation of collagen in our skin. Traveling through Tibet last summer, I had the pleasure of tasting butter tea which is widely thought of as the ‘drink of choice.’ I also saw many Tibetans use butter as a form of facial moisturizer. Anyway, enough of my rambling, please read on what I recently found…

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back. It was a white substance with no food appeal so the y added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavorings.

DO YOU KNOW…the difference between margarine and butter?

Both have the same amount of calories.

Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams.

Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.

Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods..

Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few only because they are added!

Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods.

Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years.

And now, for Margarine..

Very high in trans fatty acids.

Triple risk of coronary heart disease.

Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)

Increases the risk of cancers up to five fold.

Lowers quality of breast milk.

Decreases immune response.

Decreases insulin response.

And here’s the most disturbing fact…. HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!

Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC..

This fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).

You can try this yourself:

Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things:

* no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something)

* it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value; nothing will grow on it Even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic. Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

Share This With Your Friends…..(If you want to “butter them up”)!

Yoga For Your Digestion

January 31st, 2010

What is the digestive system?

The digestive system is a set of organs that help process the food that we eat. It is important for the body to breakdown this food, so that the vital nutrients can be absorbed and for energy of the body to be replenished. The digestive system consists of the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine or the colon, rectum and the anus.

What are digestive problems?

Like any other organ of the body, the digestive organs are also prone to many diseases and disorders, most of which are related in some way or another, to our lifestyle. Though most of the disorders are minor, like stomach upset and nausea, there are others that are chronic or intermittent.

A digestive problem of any kind can upset your schedule and make you feel miserable. A common saying goes that all ailments of the body begin from the digestive system. Usually digestive cleansing with the help of herbs, enemas or surgical tools can keep most of the digestive woes away. However, building a strong immune system and eating what’s right for you can go a long way to building a healthy digestive system. Do not let a digestive problem get you down. There is one digestive remedy that will help you stay away from any digestive disorders and that is Yoga.

Yoga for digestive problems

Your digestive health is affected to a large extent by the food that you eat and the lifestyle you maintain. Yogic philosophy believes that for good health, digestion is extremely important.

A lot of people have found relief from their continuing problems by doing yoga for digestive system. There are many others, who, by the practice of yoga, have prevented themselves from becoming susceptible to stomach problems. Yoga not only helps stretch and tone the muscles of the abdomen, it can also stimulate the endocrine glands to make them work more efficiently. The entire digestive system thus becomes well oiled and functions smoothly to improve digestive health.

Yoga helps increase awareness of the body and its ailments. Though medicines can provide intermediate relief, yoga for digestive system means a lifetime of healthy digestion. It helps you alter your lifestyle with ease, reduce stress and other environmental factors that may cause digestive problems, and helps you attain peace and inner tranquility. Breathing exercises like Anuloma Viloma and Kapalbhatti can help increase immunity by enabling the heart to pump more blood. Stretching poses help strengthen the muscles of the digestive organs. For chronic disorders though, it is best that you to consult a yoga expert and find out what poses would be best suited for you.

Chants - What do they mean?

January 21st, 2010

Ever wonder what you’re chanting during a yoga class? Nervous about chanting the wrong thing? The Yoga Journal Guide provides translations, historical information, and audio clips for common chants.

1. AUM

The Primal Shabda
Om, actually pronounced “Aum,” is an affirmation of the Divine Presence that is the universe and is similar to the Hebrew “Amen.” There are many ways of chanting Aum, but this is an approach that will initiate you as a Shabda Yogi, one who pursues the path of sound toward wholeness and higher states of consciousness. Listen to Aum

2. Lokah Samastha

5. Bija Mantras

Seed Mantras

In the “seed” (bija) mantras each seed is conceived of as the sound-form of a particular Hindu deity, and each deity is in turn a particular aspect of the Absolute (Brahman). It’s said that just as a great tree resides in within the seed, so does a god or goddess reside in each bija. When we chant the bijas, we identify each syllable with the divine energy they represent.

Lam
Curve the tip of your tongue up and back, and place it on the rear section of the upper palate to pronounce a sound like the word alum without the initial a.
Base of the spine

Vam
Place the upper set of teeth on the inner section of your lower lip and begin with a breathy consonant to imitate the sound of a fast car. Pronounce the mantra like “fvam.”

The Happiest People on Earth

January 14th, 2010

From the NY TIMES, By NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF

Hmmm. You think it’s a coincidence? Costa Rica is one of the very few countries to have abolished its army, and it’s also arguably the happiest nation on earth.

There are several ways of measuring happiness in countries, all inexact, but this pearl of Central America does stunningly well by whatever system is used. For example, the World Database of Happiness, compiled by a Dutch sociologist on the basis of answers to surveys by Gallup and others, lists Costa Rica in the top spot out of 148 nations.

Blue Osa Yoga Sanctuary and Spa wellness retreat in Costa Rica on the Osa Peninsula

That’s because Costa Ricans, asked to rate their own happiness on a 10-point scale, average 8.5. Denmark is next at 8.3, the United States ranks 20th at 7.4 and Togo and Tanzania bring up the caboose at 2.6.

Scholars also calculate happiness by determining “happy life years.” This figure results from merging average self-reported happiness, as above, with life expectancy. Using this system, Costa Rica again easily tops the list. The United States is 19th, and Zimbabwe comes in last.

A third approach is the “happy planet index,” devised by the New Economics Foundation, a liberal think tank. This combines happiness and longevity but adjusts for environmental impact — such as the carbon that countries spew.

Here again, Costa Rica wins the day, for achieving contentment and longevity in an environmentally sustainable way. The Dominican Republic ranks second, the United States 114th (because of its huge ecological footprint) and Zimbabwe is last.

Maybe Costa Rican contentment has something to do with the chance to explore dazzling beaches on both sides of the country, when one isn’t admiring the sloths in the jungle (sloths truly are slothful, I discovered; they are the tortoises of the trees). Costa Rica has done an unusually good job preserving nature, and it’s surely easier to be happy while basking in sunshine and greenery than while shivering up north and suffering “nature deficit disorder.”

After dragging my 12-year-old daughter through Honduran slums and Nicaraguan villages on this trip, she was delighted to see a Costa Rican beach and stroll through a national park. Among her favorite animals now: iguanas and sloths.

(Note to boss: Maybe we should have a columnist based in Costa Rica?)

What sets Costa Rica apart is its remarkable decision in 1949 to dissolve its armed forces and invest instead in education. Increased schooling created a more stable society, less prone to the conflicts that have raged elsewhere in Central America. Education also boosted the economy, enabling the country to become a major exporter of computer chips and improving English-language skills so as to attract American eco-tourists.

Alternate Nostril Breathing

January 13th, 2010

Awareness of the ida and pingala nadis can help you develop a balanced practice and clear the way for your spiritual growth.

Balancing Act - Alternate Nostril Breathing

By James Bailey

PLEASE Click here to see our upcoming Retreats and Events.

What is Alternate Nostril Breathing?A student of the great Indian poet Kabir once asked him, “Kabir, where is God?” His answer was simple: “He is the breath within the breath.” To understand the profound implications of Kabir’s reply, we need to look beyond the physical components of breath, the oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other molecules that stream in and out with our every inhalation and exhalation. Beyond this breath, yet within it is prana, the universal vital energy that is quite literally the stuff of life.

For those of us who practice yoga, the challenge is to harness this energy so it can fuel our physical, mental, and spiritual development. To do this, we need to look deeply into the mysteries of the mind and the subtle body. Fortunately, the early practitioners of Tantra voyaged into this inner landscape, mapping the many ways energy circulates within us. Among their most important discoveries were the nadis, the vast network of energy channels that makes each individual an integrated, conscious, and vital whole.

The Sanskrit word nadi derives from the root nad , which means “flow,” “motion,” or “vibration.” The word itself suggests the fundamental nature of a nadi: to flow like water, finding the path of least resistance and nourishing everything in its path. The nadis are our energetic irrigation system; in essence, they keep us alive.

{sidebar id=2} According to many Tantric texts, the human body contains 72,000 nadis that channel prana to every cell. Some are wide and rushing; others are a mere trickle. When this system flows freely, we are vital and healthy; when it becomes weak or congested, we struggle with poor mental and physical health. The practices of hatha yoga are so effective because they strengthen the flow of prana in our bodies, invigorating the current so that it carries away obstructions that block the free flow of energy.

Because nadis like the chakras (psychoenergetic power centers), prana, and other aspects of the subtle body don’t show up under microscopes, medical science has relegated them to the realm of the merely metaphorical. But traditional yogis believe that the subtle body is real, and that understanding it and working with it complement and counterbalance the emphasis on gross physical anatomy that predominates our current yoga culture.

Night and Day

Three nadis are of particular interest to yogis. The sushumna (most gracious) nadi is the body’s great river, running from the base of the spine to the crown of the head, passing through each of the seven chakras in its course. It is the channel through which kundalini shakti (the latent serpent power) and the higher spiritual consciousness it can fuel rises up from its origin at the muladhara (root) chakra to its true home at the sahasrara (thousandfold) chakra at the crown of the head. In subtle body terms, the sushumna nadi is the path to enlightenment.

The ida (comfort) and pingala (tawny) nadis spiral around the sushumna nadi like the double helix of our DNA, crossing each other at every chakra. If you visualize the caduceus, the symbol of modern medicine, you’ll get a rough idea of the relationships among the ida, pingala, and sushumna nadis. Eventually, all three meet at the ajna (command) chakra, midway between the eyebrows.

The ida nadi begins and ends on the left side of sushumna. Ida is regarded as the lunar nadi, cool and nurturing by nature, and is said to control all mental processes and the more feminine aspects of our personality. The color white is used to represent the subtle vibrational quality of ida. Pingala, the solar nadi, begins and ends to the right of sushumna. It is warm and stimulating by nature, controls all vital somatic processes, and oversees the more masculine aspects of our personality. The vibrational quality of pingala is represented by the color red.

The interaction between ida and pingala corresponds to the internal dance between intuition and rationality, consciousness and vital power, and the right and left brain hemispheres. In everyday life, one of these nadis is always dominant. Although this dominance alternates throughout the day, one nadi tends to be ascendant more often and for longer periods than the other. This results in personality, behavior, and health issues that can be called ida-like or pingala-like.

Ida-like individuals have lunar, or nurturing, qualities but may lack the verve to sustain a strong yoga practice. They are full of potential, but unless they develop their pingala side may never manifest that potential in either worldly affairs or spiritual development. Pingala-like individuals have solar qualities: type A personalities, lots of creativity, abundant vitality. But unless they develop their ida side, they may lack the quietude, introspection, and receptivity necessary to yield to the grace of spiritual awakening.

Creating Equilibrium

Bringing ida and pingala into equilibrium is a major focus of hatha yoga is so important, in fact, that the term hatha symbolizes this balance. Although the word hatha literally means “forceful” in Sanskrit, it is composed of ha and tha, two esoteric bija (seed) mantras that have arcane meaning and power. Ha represents the solar qualities, the vital force, of pingala; tha represents the mind and the lunar qualities of ida. Balancing sun and moon, or pingala and ida, facilitates the awakening and arising of kundalini, and thus the awakening of higher consciousness. In fact, some yoga teachings hold that as long as either ida or pingala predominates, sushumna stays closed and the power of kundalini lies dormant.

The most powerful method of balancing ida and pingala is Nadi Shodhana, alternate-nostril breathing. (Literally, the Sanskrit means “nadi cleansing.”) This practice is effective because the ida nadi is directly connected to the left nostril, and the pingala nadi to the right. A few rounds of this basic pranayama technique at the end of an asana practice are an excellent way to help restore equilibrium between the two nadis and to compensate for any imbalance you may have inadvertently caused during your practice.

Coming into Balance

To practice Nadi Shodhana, sit in a comfortable meditative position. Make a fist with your right hand, then partially reextend your ring and little fingers. Lightly place the pad of the thumb on your nose just to the right and below the bridge; lightly place the pads of your ring and little fingers on the corresponding flesh on the left side of your nose. Gently pressing with the ring and little fingers to close the left nostril, exhale fully through the right. Then inhale fully through the right, close it with the thumb, release the left nostril, and exhale through it. Inhale through the left nostril, close it with the fingers, release the right nostril, and exhale through it. This completes one round of Nadi Shodhana.

In addition to using Nadi Shodhana, you can experiment with using the asanas themselves as a method of balancing ida and pingala. At the beginning of a practice, sit and observe your breath to see which nostril and, hence, which nadi is dominant. (If you can’t tell, try a few rounds of alternate-nostril breathing-it should be immediately clear which side is freer and which feels more inhibited). If the left nostril dominates, ida is in charge, and you might consider focusing your attention on invigorating asanas such as backbends, standing poses, inversions, and twists to engage the pingala nadi. If the right nostril dominates, the cooling, calming energy of seated poses and forward bends might be most beneficial.

You can also bring awareness of ida and pingala into any asana practice by pausing between poses to notice which nadi dominates your breathing. Notice your mind-states as well; you will find they closely correlate with which nadi is ascendant. Are you agitated and active (pingala-like) or calm and receptive (ida-like)  Through this checking-in process, you can begin to identify which poses activate one nadi or the other, and which are particularly effective for you, at least in creating physical and emotional equilibrium. You’ll also be developing your awareness, deepening your practice, and clearing the way for your spiritual growth.

The Body Brillance

January 7th, 2010

This Book recently came across my desk from the Author, who is a Hot Nude Yogi living in Texas. It is a brilliant book that shows the reader and sincere seeker how to get in touch with their body. The book is filled with beautiful pictures.

The Body BrillianceYou may watch a clip on this book by clicking here.

More about the book…

Body Brilliance:

Mastering Your Five Vital Intelligences

By Alan Davidson

Photography by Victoria Davis

This book is a warm, funny, encouraging, compassionate and deeply personal guide to waking your spirit fully in your body. It engages your “five essential intelligences”—physical, mental, emotional, moral and spiritual—and develops them fully. You feel a high level of energy when your potential is being fully expressed in one of these areas; it’s important to your happiness to identify and improve the areas in which your energy feels low or weak.

Body Brilliance is filled with inspiring stories. It tells the surprising details of people who exemplified peak development in one form or another: Olympians Jesse Owens and Wilma Rudolph for physical intelligence; Albert Einstein for mental intelligence, and Rumi and his teacher Shams for spiritual intelligence. It provides powerful yet simple ways in which you can fully engage each level, by finding the wisdom that your body is trying to communicate with you—and then living that wisdom in powerful experience through your body. It teaches you to pay attention to your unique individual patterns, listening deeply to your body’s messages.

Body Brilliance is also full of practical exercises to awaken each level, and to encourage you to find your personal levels of peak expression in that domain. When you wake up fully in your body, and harmonize all five layers, you discover a result that is more than the sum of the parts; you fall deeply in love with being alive, and infatuated with being fully present in your life.

Gandhi

Peace will not come out of a clash of arms but out of justice lived and done by unarmed nations in the face of odds.

Democracy and violence can ill go together.

Evolution of democracy is not possible if we are not prepared to hear the other side.

A coward is incapable of exhibiting love; it is the prerogative of the brave.

Hatred ever kills, love never dies; such is the vast difference between the two.

What is obtained by love is retained for all time. What is obtained by hatred proves a burden in reality for it increases hatred.

Non-cooperation with evil is a sacred duty.

Nonviolence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind.
It is mightier than the mightiest weapon of destruction devised by the ingenuity of man

The weak can never forgive.
Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.

What kind of victory is it when someone is left defeated?
You must be the change you wish to see in the world.

It may be long before the law of love will be recognized in international affairs. The machinery’s of government stand between and hide the hearts of one people from those of another.

To forgive is not to forget. The merit lies in loving in spite of the vivid knowledge that the one that must be loved is not a friend.

You assist an evil system most effectively by obeying its orders and decrees. An evil system never deserves such allegiance. Allegiance to it means partaking of the evil.

A good person will resist an evil system with his or her whole soul.

Nonviolence is not a garment to be put on and off at will.
Its seat is in the heart, and it must be an inseparable part of our being.

Violent means will give violent freedom.

However much I may sympathize with and admire worthy motives, I am an uncompromising opponent of violent methods even to serve the noblest of causes.

Man and his deed are two distinct things. Whereas a good deed should call forth approbation, and a wicked deed disapprobation, the doer of the deed,
whether good or wicked always deserves respect or pity as the case may be.

Hate the sin and not the sinner is a precept which though easy enough to understand is rarely practiced, and that is why the poison of hatred
spreads in the world.

Nonviolence and cowardice are contradictory terms. Nonviolence is the greatest virtue, cowardice the greatest vice. Nonviolence springs from love, cowardice from hate. Nonviolence always suffers, cowardice would always inflict suffering. Perfect nonviolence is the highest bravery.

Nonviolent conduct is never demoralizing, cowardice always is.

Destruction is not the law of humans. Man lives freely only by his readiness to die, if need be, at the hands of his brother, never by killing him. Every murder or other injury, no matter for what cause, committed or inflicted on another is a crime against humanity.

Man’s nature is not essentially evil. Brute nature has been known to yield to the influence of love. You must never despair of human nature.

It is the law of love that rules mankind. Had violence, i.e. hate, ruled us
we should have become extinct long ago. And yet, the tragedy of it is that the so-called civilized men and nations conduct themselves as if the basis of society was violence.

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment.

Whether humanity will consciously follow the law of love, I do not know.
But that need not disturb me. The law will work just as the law of gravitation works, whether we accept it or not. The person who discovered the law of love was a far greater scientist than any of our modern scientists. Only our explorations have not gone far enough and so it is not possible for everyone to see all its workings.

It is good to see ourselves as others see us. Try as we may, we are never able to know ourselves fully as we are, especially the evil side of us. This we can do only if we are not angry with our critics but will take in good heart whatever they might have to say.

Gandhi was once asked what he thought about western civilization. His
response was: “I think it would be a good idea.”

A Beautiful Daily Prayer

November 30th, 2009

I recently went to see the movie, “Men Who Stare At Goats.” It was made to be a comedy, but Clooney in his genius, always gives a lot to to think about.

In this movie, there is a Daily Prayer I wanted to share with you. (I modified it a little.)

“Mother Earth, my life support system. As your loyal servant I must drink your blue water, live inside your red clay and eat your green skin.

I pray my feet will always kiss your face and my footsteps match your heartbeat.

Carry my body through space and time. You are my connection to the Universe and all that comes after. I am yours and you are mine. ”

We all know that our government can, does, and will do some pretty crazy things. Nevertheless, even as we expect lunacy to be a bureaucratic constant, there are occasionally instances where we’re still left a bit gobsmacked by certain revelations. You know, like in the 1980s when the U.S. government believed they could actually train Jedis.

Giving the concept “Star Wars Defense System” a far different (and more literal) meaning than originally intended, a Cold War era top-secret special ops defense department division made the bold effort to develop psychic powers for purposes of war (as Bill Django—head of the division—puts it with a straight face: “We must become the first Superpower to develop super powers.”).

Adapted from author Jon Ronson’s nonfiction book of the same name, The Men Who Stare at Goats recounts the bizarre history of this enterprise. While certainly played for broad satire, the perfunctory “based on a true story” opening text is tweaked, strongly suggesting to us “more of this is true than you would believe.” It’s left up to us to draw the line between truth and incredulity, but at least the basic facts (though names have been changed) and arc of history are to be believed—which are these.

Called (yes) “Project Jedi”, the U.S. Army opened an experimental lab in the late 70s and 80s at Fort Bragg, N.C. in which men would hone “evolutionary tactics” of mind control. Though military-based, the purpose of the project—called The New Earth Army (changed from the real-life moniker First Earth Battalion) —was actually altruistic, its end goal intending to psychically control or stop aggressors before they could strike. Or, in simpler terms, to use the Force.

A select group of men believed to have special gifts and strong extrasensory tendencies were recruited. This is their story, and given its nature it should come as no surprise that the title doesn’t merely hold a cryptic, metaphoric meaning but serves rather as a quite literal descriptor.

These men—”warrior monks” as they were called—stared at goats to exercise their powers, intently and psychically practicing mind control on them, the ultimate achievement being to literally “think” them to death (the success rate was extremely low, in case you were wondering). Other uses are hinted at (instant cloud dispersal, to name one), and collectively it’s what you get when you combine a military mentality with flower power.

More transcendental than tactical, the regimen of Officer Django (Jeff Bridges, in full “Dude” mode, but much closer to enlightenment here) provides some of the film’s biggest laughs. The “Prayer to Mother Earth,” for example, is so absurdly perfect that one suspects it must be among the film’s historical accuracies; it seems too ridiculously sincere to be anything but true—as is the yoga free-form that substitutes for calisthenics, as well as Django’s earnest visionary declarations (”The world needs the Jedi now more than ever!”).

All of this is seen (and told) through the lens of an outsider, reporter Bob Wilton (Ewan McGregor, ironically the film’s non-Jedi). He accidentally stumbles into the story after a chance run-in at a Kuwaiti hotel with the program’s most promising recruit, Lyn Cassady (George Clooney, in a brilliantly-metered comic turn), though as events unfold we have to wonder if the meeting was mere chance or metaphysical destiny. Rounding out the cast is Kevin Spacey (about as good as he’s been in a decade) as another member of the New Earth Army and Cassady’s glory-driven nemesis.

The Men Who Stare at Goats is consistently funny and occasionally inspired (fueled mainly by the stellar cast), playing like a mainstream Coen Brothers film—but it’s not quite as good as it could’ve been, or should’ve. To the extent it falls short of its potential, the deficiencies are all directorial. Debut helmer Grant Heslov is George Clooney’s long-time producer (they’ve switched roles for the first time) and his worst offense is that he plays it safe.

The tone is broad but should disturb more than it does (the few efforts come too late), and so while the laughs are earned they never really bite. The final act especially stumbles as it strains for nobility, suddenly sentimentalizing characters and actions that had been previously mocked. It’s a bit of schmaltz unbecoming a satire, a genre of which “feel good” should never be a goal.

Political bias seeps in a bit, too, as these endeavors are seen as well-intended while the prevue of the government, but become “corrupt” once transferred to private contractors. Wilton’s constant voice-over is also too much, filling in blanks and providing context to elements that would be better left enigmas.

So it’s not perfect. So what? The Men Who Stare at Goats still makes for a good time at the movies, is a solid Hollywood entertainment that avoids formula more than it succumbs to it, and at this time of year when many films are unabashed self-important Oscar-baits it’s refreshing to have one entry (from former Oscar nominees and winners, no less) that’s main goal is to simply make us laugh.

One of the Biggest Scams - Codex

November 13th, 2009

Below is some information about Codex.    This is information that I have been hearing about now for 15 years.  Apparently this has been in the works for a lot longer.  This is the kind of thing that a normal sane person would say is impossible and crazy.  Well decide for yourself.  But do read on.  And MORE IMPORTANTLY, stay informed!

Codex Alimentarius (World Food Code)
Summarized in 7 Points

HealthFreedomUSA.org, the website of the Natural Solutions Foundation, is beholden to no one: our only interest is health freedom. Rima E. Laibow, MD, successful natural medicine physician since the 1970s, has studied 16,000 pages of Codex documentation. Her conclusion is that people who say that Codex is “consumer protection”, “voluntary”, or “harmless” are, at best, seriously mistaken.

Codex in Depth: http://www.healthfreedomusa.org/index.php?page_id=161

1) Started in 1962 by UN, Imposed by WTO Sanctions

Codex Alimentarius was created in 1962 as a trade Commission by the UN to control the international trade of food. Its initial intentions may have been altruistic but it has been taken over by corporate interests, most notably the pharmaceutical, pesticide, biotechnology and chemical industries.

Codex Alimentarius is backed up by the crippling trade sanctions of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Any non Codex-compliant nation would face huge economic punishment since they would automatically lose in any food-trade dispute with a Codex compliant country.

2) “Nutrients are Toxins” Is Junk Science

Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) has two committees which impact nutrition.

One of them, the “Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses” (CCNFSDU), is chaired by Dr. Rolf Grossklaus, a physician who believes that nutrition has no role in health. This is the “top-guy” for Codex nutritional policy, and he has stated that “nutrition is not relevant to health”.

As unbelievable as it may sound, Dr. Grossklaus actually declared nutrients to be toxins in 1994 and instituted the use of toxicology (Risk Assessment) to prevent nutrients from having any impact on humans who take supplements! It is worth mentioning that Dr. Grossklaus happens to own the Risk Assessment company advising CCNFSDU and Codex on this issue. This company makes money when its toxicology services are used for the “assessment” of nutrients. Here in the U.S. we call that a “conflict of interest”.

Codex is made up of thousands of standards and guidelines. One of them, the Vitamin and Mineral Guideline (VMG), is designed to permit only ultra low doses of vitamins and minerals (and make clinically effective nutrients illegal). How can the VMG restrict dosages of vitamins and minerals? By using Risk Assessment (toxicology) to assess nutrients.

While Risk Assessment is a legitimate science (it is a branch of toxicology), it is the wrong science for assessing nutrients! In fact, in this context, it is actually junk science. Biochemistry, the science of life processes, is the correct science for assessing nutrients. Codex Alimentarius treats nutrients as toxins, which is literally insane.

Nutrients are not toxins – they are essential for life.

No matter what Codex Alimentarius officials say to convince you that Risk Assessment is a “science-based” approach to nutrients, it is not.

And it is worth repeating that Dr. Grossklaus, the head of Codex Alimentarius, owns the Risk Assessment company advising CCNFSDU and Codex on the “benefit” of using Risk Assessment to assess nutrients.

3) Not Consumer Protection – That’s Propaganda

Contrary to the propaganda, Codex Alimentarius has nothing to do with consumer protection. Nothing! Codex is about the economic ambitions of multi-national corporations, in particular, the pharmaceutical industry.

Using their multi billion-dollar marketing budgets, these industries have launched a massive media propaganda campaign to paint Codex Alimentarius as a benevolent tool of “consumer protection”, as well as to negatively taint the image of natural health options and mislead people to fear them as “dangerous”, so they will take drugs (which really are dangerous). Natural health products and options have an amazing safety record and are remarkably effective, especially when compared to pharmaceutical drugs.

Unfortunately, one-time defenders of health freedom such as National Nutritional Foods Association (NNFA) and Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) have joined the propaganda bandwagon and are spreading false information saying that Codex Alimentarius is either “harmless” or benevolent “consumer protection”. Neither is true.

The membership of these one-time defenders of health freedom has become permeated by people from the pharmaceutical industry (for example, CRN counts as its members corporations such as Monsanto® and Bayer®).

4) Codex: Serious Threat to Health and Health Freedom

If Codex Alimentarius is implemented in the United States of America, therapeutic dosages of vitamins and minerals (and all other nutrients soon to follow) will become unavailable because they will literally become illegal.

Here’s how it would work, in a nut-shell:

Due to the junk science use of Risk Assessment (toxicology) to assess supposedly toxic nutrients, a false belief is being engineered saying that “nutritional supplements are dangerous to people’s health”.

Using this false belief generates calls to “protect” people from these “toxic” nutrients. After the calls come the bills to set ultra low permissible dosages (remember, nutrients are deemed “dangerous toxins” under this false belief). If enough of us and our Congressional delegates buy this nonsense, we and Congress would blindly comply with Codex Alimentarius’ VMG. And blind compliance is what the industries behind Codex Alimentarius intend.

Blind compliance goes hand-in-hand with lack of activism. This lack of activism allows our protective laws, classifying nutrients as foods with no upper limits (such as DSHEA), to be easily repealed and replaced with draconian laws to classify nutrients as toxins. And “harmonization” with the pro-illness, pro-pharmaceutical industry Vitamin and Mineral Guideline is there to fill the void.

Only intentionally ineffective, ultra low dose supplements would be legal, with or without a prescription, on the VMG list. If enough people do not take action, we can expect to watch nutritional supplement manufacturers and, thus health food stores, to go out of business, in a domino effect. The only player left standing would be Big Pharma.

Therapeutic grade vitamins, minerals, and amino acids would be eliminated from the marketplace (although a few low-dose supplements would be allowed by Codex, as a symbolic measure to avoid suspicion about their ulterior motive).

Natural health professionals would lose the tools of their trade (nutritional supplements) and health conscious people would be unable to choose natural health options for health promotion and disease treatment.

And that is, in a nutshell, how Codex Alimentarius is poised to make Natural and Nutritional Medicine (NNM) disappear from the legal health world and go underground. Who benefits? Big Pharma.

It would take a few years for the above scenarios to be feasible (Codex Alimentarius is meant to go into full global effect by 2010). The slower the process takes, the less alarmed people will be. That’s probably the logic of the architects of Codex Alimentarius.

5) Serves Economic Interests of Sickness Industries Through WTO and Napoleonic Code

More and more people are turning to natural health products globally. The “wellness” trend is a major trend in today’s society. The more natural health products people use, the fewer drugs they buy. The pharmaceutical industry, which is part of the “Sickness Industry”, fears the inevitable shift toward natural health care.

Instead of accepting the will of the people and rethinking the future of the pharmaceutical industry, the industry has decided upon an unethical course of action: the use of deception and deceit to eliminate natural health products completely.

Codex Alimentarius is a shrewd vehicle for protecting the pharmaceutical industry from the loss of income it stands to suffer due to the inevitable growth of natural healthcare.

Codex Alimentarius is the resistance of the dinosaurs to inevitability: the burgeoning desire of humanity for a healthier, saner, and more sustainable way of life.

The World Trade Organization (WTO) intends to force Codex Alimentarius upon the nations of the world, including the U.S. This would be done under the threat of massive economic sanctions if WTO-countries do not comply with Codex Alimentarius.

Furthermore, Codex is based in the Napoleonic Code, not Common Law. That means that under Codex Alimentarius, anything not explicitly permitted is forbidden. Under Common Law, we hold that anything not explicitly forbidden is permitted. The difference is the difference between health freedom and health tyranny. Codex Alimentarius would be able to ban supplements by default.

Change is inevitable!

September 18th, 2009

I was at Blue Osa in July 09. While Adam is going there about once a month, I had not been there since Christmas and was shocked to see all the changes that had taken place. It is certainly one thing to have a vision of what the property will look like, but it is quite another to watch and see the process take place.

Luke, our landscaper and photographer extraordinaire recently took these photos.

Now that we are going into planting season, it will be exciting to see even more changes by Christmas!

The Ripple Effects Of Yoga Retreat

September 12th, 2009

Getting Connected On A Yoga Retreat
by Aaron Star

Having just come back from leading a retreat and spending five wondrous days with 21 men, I am reminded yet again of the profound effect that taking the time from our daily lives to go on a retreat can have on us and the continuous ripple effects that take place.

As one student put it in a previous Memorial Weekend Retreat:

“I was so inspired by the courageousness, openness, and vulnerability of all the people at the retreat, and it gave me such graceful permission to get in touch with myself, to feel my feelings, and to express what I was experiencing.”

The busyness of our lives is so all encompassing that it becomes more and more challenging to navigate our true self to what is really important. Bryan Kest says, repeatedly in his yoga classes, “What a wonderful thing it is to unroll our yoga mats and to be able to block out the distractions of the outside world, and then be able to turn our minds inward and focus on our breath.”

A yoga retreat is that and more.

I am reminded continuously of the proverbial tiger who is always chasing its tail, but never seems to catch it. He is forever chasing something that he will never catch, is unaware of the time investment and is happy when he gets close, but miserable when he is far away. Basically, the cat is ignorant.

In the system of yoga we call this Avidya, which translates as “without knowledge” or “to not have knowledge of.”
The essence of the teaching lies in the idea that we do not have knowledge of our true essence and that yoga sadhana (spiritual practice) gives us that knowledge. The main problem mostly lies in the idea that we don’t know what we don’t know. In the words of my teacher, the best that we can hope for in our yoga practice is to lessen what we don’t know.

There is a beautiful parallel that Steven Covey draws in his teaching titled, “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People”. He talks about the person who stumbles across a man sawing down a tree and asks, “How long have you been sawing down that tree?” The man sawing replies by saying, “For hours and it seems like I am not getting anywhere.” The man then simply asks, “Have you tried to sharpen your saw?” The man sawing replied, “Can’t you see that I am too busy dumb dumb?”

How do we know that we are too busy until we stop? Furthermore, how do we know what our minds are capable of accomplishing, until we begin to create a place for that to happen? The great teachers have always compelled us to test our mind’s limitations and to stretch ourselves to what is possible.

Being surrounded by people who are on a similar path is not only supportive, but can exponentiate not only the outer, but more importantly, the inner transformation process. As a collective support group (known also as a Sanga or Kula) we can move forward more quickly together.

As one student commented, “The group of men built an emotionally intimate community very quickly. It was a wonderful and blessed brotherhood. It was a special kindred spirit connection, “the dear love of comrades,” as Walt Whitman called.”

You know the sense of peace and clarity you have after a yoga practice? Imagine sustaining that effortlessly for a longer period of time. Then imagine how much of an impact that can have on your life. A yoga retreat can be like the little pebble thrown into a pond. The splash is not that big, but the ripple effect lasts a long time.

“3 months later, the effects of the retreat are still impacting my life on a daily basis.”

Give yourself space to get connected with yourself and to get connected with each other. And then stay connected in your practice.

Costa Rica: Post 4 My Flip Flops Join the Umbrella

August 20th, 2009

This piece was written from one of our friends who came to visit. You may visit his Blog at http://jrh456.blogspot.com/

One of the most effective ways to get around the Osa besides walking is on a Quad. Otherwise known as a four wheeler, since the Doctor didn’t know what a Quad was before we went to Costa Rica. A Quad is generally made for one person, and sometimes two, but we were three so we needed to create a makeshift seat on the back for none other than myself when we were traveling.

The first time we went out on the Quad I put a couple towels on the back, and was smart enough to wear sneakers. While I was holding on for dear life I noticed that the bar I was holding on to was right above the exhaust and got hot quickly. There was conveniently a rag blowing in the wind and I caught it and used it to protect my hand. Overall, it wasn’t really a bad ride. It actually was a more comfortable ride then the jeep, mainly because the Quad had better suspension and the breeze felt good.

The second trip was into town and it proved a bit more challenging. First off I decided to wear flip flops, figuring that I would just hold them while we were on the Quad so that they wouldn’t fall off. This worked for a while until my hand started to ache from stretching around my flip flops and then to the bar I needed to hold onto, and because the ride into town was longer my towels began to shift which made the ride slightly more uncomfortable. Bounce bounce bounce pothole… OUCH! That was pretty much the trip into town and to the restaurant on the beach. Don’t get me wrong it was a beautiful ride, it was just painful at times.

After the restaurant I decided to try leaving my flip flops on for a bit until our next stop. This was also a bad idea as my toes got cramped trying to hold my flip flops on my feet as we whizzed past building on an open air machine at 40 miles per hour. Finally, I decided to wedge the flip flops in and out of the bars where I was sitting keeping them nice and secure without me having to worry about holding them. This proved even more useful since our next stop was the market where we bought some items we needed back at the resort. When we got back on the Quad the Doctor had to hold on to Yogi A in the front and not let got of a bag full of candles and fruit, and I had to hold onto a bag with a bottle of wine and a few other items in it.

As the landscape flew by and I was getting covered in dust and grime I was getting an excellent core workout, holding onto the bar on the quad with one hand, and a bottle of wine with his other. Every once in a while the Doctor had to reach back and stabilize me so I wouldn’t go flying off the Quad and break the bottle of wine. Bounce bounce bounce, pothole… Ouch… Images of me being covered in red wine, shards of glass, and lovely scratches caused by jagged Costa Rica rocks danced through my head. We were getting closer to the resort as we bounced our way down the road. I was feeling more comfortable, and almost like I was going to survive. We pull up at the gate, and I go to get off the back of the Quad. I look to my left to retrieve my flip flops and they are gone.

Damn my flip flops are now somewhere on the side of the road with the ugly umbrella. If you are down in the Osa and see a lovely pair of American Eagle flip flops, and a red umbrella please return them to the Blue Osa!

Costa Rica: Post 3 Hiking to the Waterfall

August 10th, 2009

This piece was written from one of our friends who came to visit. You may visit his Blog at http://jrh456.blogspot.com/

On the first day we were at Blue Osa we took a hike that I didn’t enjoy. The water wasn’t working so a trip up to the spring in the middle of the jungle up the mountain was necessary. This hike involved a machete which should have been my first sign that I wasn’t going to enjoy it, and as a matter of fact I never actually finished the hike because I stayed at the base of the mountain as the Doctor and Yogi A continued on. While they were up there I did get to see howler monkeys move across the trees. A few days later I told the Doctor that if he wanted to go on a hike up to the waterfall I would go with him and I even promised to enjoy it.

So we decided one afternoon to hop on the quad (that is a whole separate post) and head up to the entrance to the river. Once we parked the Quad and went up to the entrance we began our hike. The water was a bit chilly but in the 100 degree heat it was almost bearable for me. Yogi A took the lead reminding us that the most important thing about the jungle is to “know where you are putting yourself.” I was very cautious as we walked over the rocks and through the ankle to knee deep water. We came to a point where a tree was covering our path so we had to get out of the water and walk around, up over trees, up the hill and then back down. Once we had passed that area we once again entered the river and the “rapids” and ahead of us we could see the waterfall. The water was cascading down the rocks and into a beautifully tranquil pool of water in the middle of the jungle.

Once we got to the pool took off our shoes and stripped down to our swimming attire and swam around a bit, and over to the waterfall. Luckily I brought my camera carefully protected in a Ziploc bag. While the water was cold the area was beyond picturesque it was perfect. The clear water the jungle surrounding us. The massage from the waterfall as the water ran down your body. This was another amazing experience that you could only have in Costa Rica and an experience we will never forget.

The way back down was a bit more difficult for me, I am not sure if it was because I was tired or it was downhill or the water was deeper but I was having a difficult time keeping my footing. At one point because I had my camera I had to scale a rock it was about 8 feet straight up and ten feet down directly into the water or rocks. I made it all the way up and most of the way back down and about six inches from the water I slipped and fell flat on my backside. My sunglasses went flying and I had the breathe knocked out of me but the camera was safe and dry in my shorts.

Once we got back to the bottom we all got back on the quad and Yogi A took us to a different part of the beach. There was an amazing outlook deck that was above the ocean in the middle of the jungle. We sat and listen to the waves as the cam onshore. You were looking out and all you could see was the purity of nature. As we sat and listened to the waves we also noticed that a howler monkey was very close. You could hear his cries from the trees behind us. As Yogi A and I sat on the outlook deck the Doctor went to go look for his howler monkey, and he found it. He came running back quietly a few minutes later looking for the camera, and he got a clear picture and video of the howler from below, this was as close as either of us had ever been to these monkeys, although we heard them every morning.

We ventured back to Blue Osa a bit later fully satisfied. We had an amazing day with friends and the waterfall and sitting by the beach was only a few hours of that. More life experiences and memories were made this day. I couldn’t help but smile as I was being shaken apart on the ride back… this was what living your life is about, and I am lucky to be here to live it.
