Alive and harmonious!

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

My first impression of Costa Rica was how alive everything felt.  The harmony and interwovenness of land and sea and people and animals only grew during the week.  It was incredibly powerful to feel like a link in an unbroken chain.

Blue Osa is quite clearly beautiful and comfortable but the magic is from the people.  Every single person had a smile and a greeting, every request was met with grace and enthusiasm - and this place is just getting going!  It was really great to have so many excursions and luxuries from which to choose and to have them so artfully arranged by Stephen.  Vanessa’s spa treatment was wonderful, and everyone who came back from a massage with Jesus looked “melty”!

And let’s not forget the food - fresh, amazing, abundant, creative and cheerfully prepared.  If I could have boxed that up and brought it home, I would have.

The yoga program Lynn and Barbara put together was instructional, enlightening, and healing.  Again, the individual attention made each one of us feel special on our own, yet a strong part of the larger group.

Several of us have remarked that this experience was such that it felt like leaving home when we left.  It’s interesting to feel that I miss my friends that I knew for a week as much as if we had shared our lives for years.  I so look forward to returning and I am grateful for all who made it possible.

Namaste,
Laura

Try to relax - And after a couple days, you’ll actually unwind enough to relax.

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

The first thing you notice is the warmth with which you are welcomed when you arrive. After a ‘travel-day’ to get there, you really appreciate warm welcome. Okay you say. Doesn’t everybody? Well, here the warmth doesn’t depreciate with time. You are really welcome. And there lies the starting point for the best of the rest. The staff is bend-over-backwards accommodating for requests (they drove me into town to purchase postcards and stamps, with Mary (who everybody in town knows) handling the Spanish no less), and yet they manage to be ‘out of the way’ so you can enjoy your space. Within this acceptance, you begin to actually unwind. This is not a fast paced environment. I actually doubt you could turn in into one, but why would you want to? Once you finally come to terms with relaxation, boy, do you!!

The staff cooks up a storm. A menu that for us, was a combination of different cultures (sort of a not to strict daily geographic theme), lots of vegetables (local ones, fresh) and often chicken or freshly caught fish. But the preparation was the key. A mixture of seasonings/spices went into this that was amazing. I have never eaten so many astounding meals, ever. And amazingly enough, despite the quantity and frequency of the meals, I actually weighed 2 pounds less after. So, this food is good, healthy stuff, for sure. They really need to publish a cookbook. If you have any dietary restrictions, they are accommodated, and so subtly that you don’t realize they’ve done it. The eating area is outside, in kind of a very fancy garden cafe environment. There are no flying insects competing for your food. It is very well done.

There are activity ‘tours’ for which Blue Osa has made prearrangements with the locals who do them, and they will call for you, transport you, and put the fee on a tab for the week, which you pay when you leave. There are numerous kinds, personally, I kayaked, and went on a waterfall hike, others went ziplining over the forest canopy, surfing, horseback riding. As you are in a remote part of Costa Rica, the activities are low keyed, and very personal. No huge crowds to fight, no lines to stand in, just peacefulness.

There is a spa area, where different treatments can be provided. The practitioners are local, and excellent. The spa wraps of all kinds, massage, acupuncture, manicures, etc are on the menu. And it is the request it, put it on the tab system, too.

I was on a Yoga retreat, so we did a yoga practice every morning. This is not a requirement for staying here, but if yoga is your thing, you can’t find a better setting in which to practice than the second floor studio, with windows all around, overlooking the bay. It is beautifully done. And note, ‘windows’ are really openings, no glass, no screens. You get the breeze, the natural nature sounds — it is amazing.

The location, in the jungle, and right on the coast of Golfo Dulce (a bay off the pacific ocean), is the best part. You hear the waves all the time. You just must go for a walk on the beach, which is basically deserted (a couple of local fishermen, and nobody in the evening), so you can walk the coastline in the morning or evening in peace. If you want company, the local ‘canine-crew’ will tag along. If you want solitude, you can tell them to go back, and they amazingly do…

In my mind, I see the sunrise, and a walk on the beach in peace. It is a lasting image, still useful for busting life’s stressful moments.

It’s simple. Go.

A perfect place to relax…

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

Way off the beaten path about 30 minutes outside Puerto Jimenez, the Blue Osa Resort is a perfect spot to get away from civilization.  The resort is small - just 11 guest rooms - which prevents it from feeling overcrowded, while providing amenities (spa treatment rooms, 25 meter lap pool) that you wouldn’t expect in a facility of its size. The quality of the accommodations is definitely a step above the others found in the immediate area, while still retaining a rustic simplicity that one would expect in the rain forest location.

Food service is included, and features fresh, local produce - Marie, Angus and the rest of the kitchen staff do an outstanding job.

The resort staff will set up spa treatments, nature hikes, zip lining, horseback riding - and will consolidate all activities on a single bill (including taxi service and any gratuities) that you can pay at the end of your stay. Best of all, you’re just steps from the beach, and can hear the sounds of the waves as you lay in bed at night…

The hardest part of staying here is leaving

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

My first yoga retreat and my first trip to Costa Rica brought me here and my experience was far beyond my expectations.  The beautiful setting on the beach and in the jungle combined the best of both worlds. The architecture was top rate and the second floor yoga deck facing east and the ocean was the best place I’ve ever practiced.   The staff were friendly, accommodating and very helpful. Rooms were very comfortable and beautifully appointed in the Blue Osa style.  And the food was far truly wonderful with creative fresh vegetable dishes and some fish and chicken dishes also. (As a hardcore ‘foodie’ I’m very choosy!)  The location is perfect for relaxing or access to many water and wildlife activities.

I’ll be back!

Who would expect such a classy resort on an unpaved road in rural Costa Rica?

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

I traveled to Blue Osa for a yoga retreat, and thus was expecting to practice austerities.  True, we did arise before dawn to sit in stillness for an hour, but doing so also meant that we watched the sun rise over the Golfo Dulce through the east-facing windows of the yoga studio.  A light breakfast of fruit and delicious Costa Rican coffee prepared us for the longer, more strenuous practice that took up most of the morning.  Then we repaired to the dining area for brunch, always expertly cooked and served with a flourish. “Light lunch” was presented around 2 p.m.–usually soup, salad, sandwiches, gallo pinto.  Cocktail hour arrived around 6, with a fabulous dinner following.  One night we had ceviche de corvina using fish that had been caught on the beach in front of the resort that very morning.

If you let Stephen, the ever-upbeat and positive office manager, know your desires, he will arrange for whatever adventure or excursion you want to participate in, including transportation.

One of the best parts of the week was simply walking barefoot on the beach, watching the fishermen competing with the pelicans, and always the waves were rolling in, the tide rising and falling.  Home seemed so quiet after a week of listening to the waves.

One of my Top Lifetime Vacations!

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Although it’s been over a week since I visited Blue Osa , I can still take my mind back to the serenity and beauty from my experience there. This tropical beachfront resort was the perfect getaway from the winter of 2010!

First impression are everything and upon my arrival, I could Blue Osa was built with a high end design taste and passion while exuding comfort and intimacy that’s important to me.  The staff immediately made me feel like I was an old friend who they were happy to see and please.

There were so many highlights from this trip including daily yoga, delicious food, luxurious spa, lush jungle beach, exciting excursions.

The yoga classes were challenging, educational and fulfilling.  I learned so much more about my practice, poses, daily mediation – all with personal attention and assistance that was purposeful, but not intimidating.

There were 4 daily meals that were prepared in the open-air kitchen by a dedicated and talented staff. We enjoyed a wonderful array of fresh ethnic foods including Mexican, Italian, Indian, and Japanese – all with lots of options for vegetarians or carnavores alike! The cold soups and homemade desserts were so unique and creative; the resort should publish a recipe book!

The jungle surroundings blended perfect with the beachfront surf and was alive with exotic wildlife.

I enjoyed several experiences in the on site spa including acupuncture, the coffee body scrub and deep tissue massage.  All the treatments were blissful and a perfect compliment to the physical elements of my trip.

The optional off site excursions were fun getaways and included the canopy tour (fantastic!), surfing (make sure there are waves!), and waterfall hike (go on your own).

I met some wonderful people from across the globe at Blue Osa and made some terrific friends who will remain “for good.”

As life’s daily stresses return after vacation, my experience here has given me the capability to return to the serenity, peace and mindfulness of Blue Osa.

A Return To Calm and Serenity

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

I just returned from a wonderful week at Blue Osa. The Blue Osa owner’s, Aaron and Adam, must be very proud of themselves and what they accomplished down there in Costa Rica.

The beauty of the land that Blue Osa is located on is so very calming and soothing on your eyes. Each day when Aaron had us do our nature walk after morning meditation and breathing exercises, I would discover some new treasure. The flowers, the beach, the architecture of the buildings all added to a visual heaven. While doing yoga to see macaws flying through the air and the waves crashing to the beach only added to its beauty and uniqueness.

From the special moments, yoga in the early morning, horseback riding through the jungle, or zip lining over the trees or helping David spread his late lover’s ashes on the beach all added to my everlasting memories of my week at Blue Osa. I returned to New York a much more calm and serene human being.

I am already looking forward to next year and my return to Blue Osa, to the people there and to keeping in touch with the beautiful people that I met this time.

Sincerely,
Paul M

PS don’t go thinking you will lose a few pounds while there! You will get excellent food made by two wonderful chefs. I miss the meal bell already summoning us to delicious healthy lunches and dinners.

Costa Rica Retreat, March 2010

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Today is my first day back to civilization after spending a week at the Blue Osa Retreat center in Puerto Jimenez, Costa Rica. I have been reading through my travel journal and marveling at how profound and wonderful a week I just had. The setting at Blue Osa is absolutely beautiful…right on the beach.

The accommodations were extremely comfortable, and the hospitality was impeccable. All of the staff were incredibly kind, attentive, and helpful, and the food was SPECTACULAR. We had one incredible, delicious, creative meal after the next, and we ate our meals in a gorgeous open-air environment, in full view of the ocean. The men at the treat were all extremely friendly and trusting, and there was such a strong sense that we were all in support of each other’s growth as yogis.

This retreat was particularly meaningful for me because I chose to be here for the one year anniversary of my husband’s death last March. I brought some of his ashes with me and held a short memorial for him on the beach. I was joined by seven other who sat in support of my process and listened to what I had to say. One gentleman brought me a plate with a bunch of bougainvillea flower petals on it, and I ended up sprinkling my husband’s ashes on the flower petals. The men watched me as I let them go on the beach. It was a beautiful moment that I will never forget. Aside from that, the retreat itself was phenomenal.

Aaron’s teachings repeatedly astounded me with his insights and applications of yogic principals. We chanted, we meditated, and we pushed ourselves to our limits and beyond. We also had a considerable amount of time to relax, connect with each other, and take side trips to local areas. It was such a safe environment, and I am so grateful for the space that Aaron has created at Blue Osa.

If you have a chance to go!

A Memorable Experience!

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

I wanted to share with you the magic of my time here, and i still have a few days left! What you have here is difficult to describe, it is all of the things one wants when traveling and hoping that you’ve made the right choice. The grounds, the hospitality, the rooms, showers, pool, the food (seriously !) the chef (wow) Maria, Stephen, its is all too much, its perfect.

What cant be described needs to be experienced, the Yoga Shala is just absolutely the most amazing space, a room filled with windows and a teak wood ceiling, my first shavasana i couldn’t get over it, beautiful. A room caressed with light and sounds and a view of the ocean that will change your own view forever.

My practice has gone places i didn’t expect, i grew in area’s of my life i didn’t know were there, my own view of what is infinite and possible are forever changed and that was a big gift to me, thank you!

I was at another reputable Yoga Retreat Spa in Costa Rica a couple years back, and it was lovely, nice place, hospitable, clean, the beach was behind the property, you could hear but not see the ocean, the spa treatments were good, the yoga room was a bit of a disappointment, while it was nice in respect to a quiet place to practice, it seemed like an after thought and not a focus, tucked in the back of the spa, a bit small, yet still nice.

If i were to compare, i would say take your life and those you love to Blue Osa and transform through the most amazing Yoga you will ever experience; then get a massage, enjoy the pool, and wine and dinner, there is no comparison.

Shanti.

Costa Rica: Post 3 Hiking to the Waterfall

Monday, August 10th, 2009

This piece was written from one of our friends who came to visit. You may visit his Blog at http://jrh456.blogspot.com/

On the first day we were at Blue Osa we took a hike that I didn’t enjoy. The water wasn’t working so a trip up to the spring in the middle of the jungle up the mountain was necessary. This hike involved a machete which should have been my first sign that I wasn’t going to enjoy it, and as a matter of fact I never actually finished the hike because I stayed at the base of the mountain as the Doctor and Yogi A continued on. While they were up there I did get to see howler monkeys move across the trees. A few days later I told the Doctor that if he wanted to go on a hike up to the waterfall I would go with him and I even promised to enjoy it.

So we decided one afternoon to hop on the quad (that is a whole separate post) and head up to the entrance to the river. Once we parked the Quad and went up to the entrance we began our hike. The water was a bit chilly but in the 100 degree heat it was almost bearable for me. Yogi A took the lead reminding us that the most important thing about the jungle is to “know where you are putting yourself.” I was very cautious as we walked over the rocks and through the ankle to knee deep water. We came to a point where a tree was covering our path so we had to get out of the water and walk around, up over trees, up the hill and then back down. Once we had passed that area we once again entered the river and the “rapids” and ahead of us we could see the waterfall. The water was cascading down the rocks and into a beautifully tranquil pool of water in the middle of the jungle.

Once we got to the pool took off our shoes and stripped down to our swimming attire and swam around a bit, and over to the waterfall. Luckily I brought my camera carefully protected in a Ziploc bag. While the water was cold the area was beyond picturesque it was perfect. The clear water the jungle surrounding us. The massage from the waterfall as the water ran down your body. This was another amazing experience that you could only have in Costa Rica and an experience we will never forget.

The way back down was a bit more difficult for me, I am not sure if it was because I was tired or it was downhill or the water was deeper but I was having a difficult time keeping my footing. At one point because I had my camera I had to scale a rock it was about 8 feet straight up and ten feet down directly into the water or rocks. I made it all the way up and most of the way back down and about six inches from the water I slipped and fell flat on my backside. My sunglasses went flying and I had the breathe knocked out of me but the camera was safe and dry in my shorts.

Once we got back to the bottom we all got back on the quad and Yogi A took us to a different part of the beach. There was an amazing outlook deck that was above the ocean in the middle of the jungle. We sat and listen to the waves as the cam onshore. You were looking out and all you could see was the purity of nature. As we sat and listened to the waves we also noticed that a howler monkey was very close. You could hear his cries from the trees behind us. As Yogi A and I sat on the outlook deck the Doctor went to go look for his howler monkey, and he found it. He came running back quietly a few minutes later looking for the camera, and he got a clear picture and video of the howler from below, this was as close as either of us had ever been to these monkeys, although we heard them every morning.

We ventured back to Blue Osa a bit later fully satisfied. We had an amazing day with friends and the waterfall and sitting by the beach was only a few hours of that. More life experiences and memories were made this day. I couldn’t help but smile as I was being shaken apart on the ride back… this was what living your life is about, and I am lucky to be here to live it.

Costa Rica: Post 2 Private Beach

Sunday, August 2nd, 2009

This piece was written from one of our friends who came to visit. You may visit his Blog at http://jrh456.blogspot.com/

The beach we had at our resort was a very private beach. We could walk the beach for an hour and not run into anybody. Our cabina was about 100 meters off of the beach and we woke up and went to bed with the sound of the waves lapping up on shore. One of the amazing things about Costa Rica is that all of the beaches and the water are immediately adjacent to the jungle. During high tide in some cases the tree are “in” the ocean. The beaches are pure and by no sense man made this is one of the most amazing aspects of the beach at the Blue Osa.

Every morning we would wake up early and head down to the beach. Some mornings we would wake up and go down to the beach and read our books as the waves crashed ashore, and other mornings we would wake up and go for an early morning walk on the beach. I took hundreds of pictures on these long walks on the beach (I know it sounds like a personal ad) as we walked up and down around the trees and looking at the animals. Some mornings we spotted the hermit crabs walking up the beach and down into there holes, other morning the Scarlett macaws were flying side by side above us. The Doctor got in the habit of talking to the animals on these walks (yes he is a little crazy).

The trees above us provided a beautiful landscape and the sun shimmered on the water. Across the water you could see the mountains along the coast, and one point across the water in the distance you could see the distant shore of Panama.

Towards one of the ends of the beach there is a river that runs into the ocean, the river and ocean contrast is beautiful and one that I can’t ever remember seeing up close before. As we walked down the other side of the beach we walked past the famous Blue Osa mud which is used in face masks and cosmetics. The Doctor collected some and he and Yogi A used it later one day.

The beach at the Blue Osa in Costa Rica is amazing, if you ever get the chance to go down to this resort when it opens next year it will be more than worth your time and money. The beach alone makes it worthwhile. And of course by the end of the last day we even had a hammock on the beach. Life could not be better.

Costa Rica: Post 1 Losing an Umbrella

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

This piece was written from one of our friends who came to visit. You may visit his Blog at http://jrh456.blogspot.com/

Last night I just got back from Costa Rica… yes the second time this year, and since we didn’t have any Internet I am going to post a few stories from Costa Rica here over the next few days. The first thing I want to write about is Friday night.

The Doctor and I are in the middle of the jungle in Costa Rica on the Osa Peninsula with our friend Yogi A who is opening a hotel/ resort there. He was kind enough to host us for a few days and on Friday night he wanted to bring us to a restaurant/ market up the road for dinner. It is the green season in Costa Rica so it generally rains, and rains very hard at night. When we go there Thursday we experienced some of the biggest thunderstorms I can remember.

So back to the story… we were getting ready for dinner when it began pouring. A tropical downpour is no joke so we thought we would wait for it to slow down. When it didn’t, and we were more than ready to go we decided to borrow an umbrella and a sheet to get across the property to the jeep. As we run, stepping in puddles and piles of mud we get to the jeep. The sheet proved to be useless as the doctor and I just ended up being soaked with a very moist and muddy sheet over us, and the umbrella didn’t prove to be much more useful since Yogi A was soaked as well.

Once we got into the car, Yogi A tried to back it up in the pouring rain, and since there are no lights in the jungle, backing up was difficult. As he turned the car around he noticed that he forgot the extra container of gas just in case we ran out since they didn’t know how much gas the jeep had in it. He ran back to the main cabina and the gas wasn’t there because the “property manager,” Marie (who will be another post later this week) was waiting along the side of the road with it since she knew we had forgotten it.

Yogi A got back to the car even more soaked then before. We were on our way out of the property and down the road. The road is a dirt road, rocky and bisected by streams of water. With the pouring rain and lack of light this was an adventure and a half. Add on top of the road conditions and the rain the fact that the windows of the jeep kept fogging up, and the fumes from the gas were making us a little silly. Yogi A let out a screech every time we went through a puddle or unexpected stream and the Doctor was laughing hysterically, I was holding on for my life as we bounced into the parking area of the restaurant.

On Friday nights this restaurant is also a “market” where the locals go to sell some of their wares. Yogi A knows some of these people including the woman who sells the chocolate, she is an amazing woman with some amazing stories, and by the time you are done talking to her you think that you are the one that is crazy. We grab a seat in at the communal table and order a bottle of wine for the Doctor and Yogi A and a beer for myself. We are slightly disappointed they don’t have pork chops but they have tuna and I have the gnnocci. We sit, we laugh, we talk, we meet up with some people from town and we have a blast. The restaurant is amazing and filled with interesting people. The food arrives and the Doctor grabs me another beer. The rain is coming down and we sit in the middle of the jungle and enjoy a fantastic meal. We continue to talk laugh drink, and mingle as a few more of Yogi A’s friends stop by to talk.

The Doctor goes over and buys some chocolate, we continue to rink talk and laugh and then we are on our way back to the resort. It is still raining a little bit as we run to the jeep dogging puddles all the way. Yogi A stops at the door and puts the umbrella he is using on the roof of the jeep as he looks for the keys and does something else. We get in the car and we adventure back. The road conditions are a little better than before and we can see out of the car. Halfway home Yogi A asks me if there is an umbrella in the back. Of course there wasn’t and he realizes that he must have left it on the roof of the car. Damn the umbrella is missing somewhere on the road. We decide that we will have to take a look for it tomorrow. Yes we laughed a little the rest of the way home about the missing bright red patterned umbrella. We also laughed about how Marie was going to respond to the fact that her umbrella was missing.

We make it home, get in the gate, make it to the kitchen area, and open another bottle of wine. We sit down and talk some more laugh, and overall enjoy each others company. We are up late enjoying every moment. it is a night I will not forget because it was a night of laughter and fun and friendship. It was a night where we enjoyed each others company without the worries of the modern world. It was a night when we lost a very ugly umbrella.
